quake lake

Saturday, May 31, 2008

MIANYANG - China was poised on Saturday to drain a dangerous "quake lake" in an attempt to avert a disaster that could have flooded the homes of over a million people.

Authorities started to helicopter workers away from a dam that was caused by quake-induced landslides after hundreds of soldiers finished an enormous drainage channel.

Water trapped in the lake in Tangjiashan was expected to start flowing out as soon as Saturday afternoon, according to Luo Haolong, a commander of the water resources section of the police working on the site.

"This afternoon, the water will flow again," said Luo. "Experts say we are ready to break through and allow the river to flow."

Other officials said that the breach may not happen for a few days, but they appeared confident their efforts would eliminate the risk of a disastrous flood.

PERTH - Oil rose towards $133 a barrel on Monday, extending the previous session's gains on a supply outage at the Statfjord oilfield in the North Sea and a weak US dollar.

RP stocks rise

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Stocks extended their gains on Thursday as investors snapped up some blue chips following modest gains on Wall Street overnight.

A better-than-expected report on consumer prices sent US stocks up 0.51 percent Wednesday. The US Labor Department announced that inflation advanced only 0.2 percent in April, calming jittery investors.

"Inflation data in the US showed a good number that encouraged investors. This positive sentiment in Wall Street trickled down to Asian markets," said Jose Vistan, research head at AB Capital Securities.

Vistan, however, noted that the market was out of fresh local leads to catalyze more buying.

The Philippines' composite index rose 15.73 points or 0.55 percent to 2,878.26.

The broader all-share index gained 9.83 points or 0.56 percent at 1,773.41.

Gainers beat losers, 64 to 36, while 59 stocks were unchanged.

Philippines two power plants

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

The Philippines said on Wednesday it has deferred the sale of two geothermal power plants by about three weeks to give interested buyers more time to complete bidding requirements.

The sale of the 289 megawatt Tiwi Plant in Albay province, and the 458.5 MW Makban in Laguna and Batangas, all on the main island of Luzon, was moved to June 27 from June 4.

"We decided to extend the bid submission deadline for the Tiwi-Makban geothermal complex to heed the request of the nine prospective bidders for more time to complete their deliverables, including conducting their due diligence," the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Managament Corp (PSALM) said in a statement.

PSALM, which is tasked to oversee the sale of the government's power assets, said it expects a successful auction after power supply contracts were attached to the sale of the plants.

The government has been guaranteeing supply contracts for plants it wants to sell to assure potential buyers of a ready income stream.

Philippine geothermal firm PNOC-Energy Development Corp, which was bought by local power producer First Gen last year, is among the interested bidders.

The Philippines has 22 active volcanoes and is the world's second largest producer of geothermal energy after the United States, as it sits on the seismically active Ring of Fire that also includes Indonesia.

Geothermal power accounts for 18 percent of the Philippines' energy mix.

IF Smart USA, distributor of the Smart microcar, could get every person who shouted, whooped, ran into the street, stopped traffic and corralled me for a chat to actually buy a Fortwo like the one I drove around Los Angeles, Daimler’s factory in France would have to run 24/7.

There is no great secret to the car’s appeal: the Smart Fortwo may be the cutest and most unusual-looking production vehicle to arrive in this country since BMW’s front-loading Isetta 300 of the 1950s.

To see if the Smart was more than a fashion statement — the charm of its shape and colors draws admirers as if it were the latest gadget from Apple — I drove the company’s better-equipped model, the Passion, for two weeks, scooting around the San Fernando Valley suburbs and across the freeways to Venice, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.

Starting at $14,235 ($15,475 as tested), the Smart Passion came with many features Americans have come to expect: air-conditioning; power steering, windows and door locks; CD player; front fog lights; and a huge moon roof. For all the bells and whistles — it even comes with an electronic stability system — cruise control was left off the list.

This resonant cry fills the air as the people of Kalibo (Aklan) and their visitors dressed in outlandish costumes and get-ups -- gyrate through the streets in a hypnotized mass of dancing and shaking. Feet stamping, hands clapping, bongos beating , and whistles blowing, all cry out the rhythmic beat of the Ati-Atihan, undoubtedly the most fantastic fiesta in the Philippines.

Ati-Atihan is celebrated in Kalibo, Aklan, on the third Sunday of January. It is held in honor of the Infant Jesus or Santo Niño. It derived its name from the word Atis, the aboriginal Negritos in the area.

Philippine Eagle

Friday, May 09, 2008

Once known as the monkey-eating eagle; it is endemic(found only) to the eastern portion of the Philippine comprising the Sierra Madre mountains in Eastern Luzon and the heavily forested area of Mindanao.

The largest eagle, standing to about three and a half feet (3 1/2) may be recognized by its powerful bill, strong legs and claws. The general body color is grayish brown in the back and wings, whitish front neck and belly with shafts of gray brown streaked feathers on the head, which when erect forms a crest.

The prey mostly on monkeys, but lately they have been observed feeding on flying lemurs (caguang), wild cats (musang), and flying squirrels (tapilac) in Mindanao. Usually the male does the hunting, sharing his catch with the female and the young, especially during the breeding time.

The life of the eagle has been closely watched resulting in the following findings: pairs occupy a wide territory in lowland and medium elevation forest. Hunting flights extend to the cleared areas as well. At breeding time, they usually indulge in high searing flights and are said to mate in mid-air. The nest is a crude platform of branches and twigs, set in the tallest tree. Only one white egg is laid which hatches in about two months.

The very size of the monkey eating eagle with its majestic stance makes it a very desirable target as a trophy. Also because of its uniqueness, there is a demand for its in major zoos of the world.

Petron

Wednesday, May 07, 2008

Oil giant Petron Corp. said Wednesday its net income for the first three months of the year dropped 31 percent to P658 million from P953 million in the same months last year due to lower refining margins.

Despite high local prices, the company reported that its total sales volume went up 10 percent to P12.92 million barrels in the first quarter, compared to P11.75 million barrels in 2007.

Sales revenue also rose 37.5 percent to P59.60 billion from P43.35 billion.

"In spite of the drop in our income, we are confident that we will be able to meet our financial and operating targets for the year as we begin to see the positive impact of our new petrochemical feedstock units," said company public affairs manager Virginia Ruivivar.

Petron had begun production of petrochemical feedstock propylene at its 180,000 barrel-per-day refinery in Bataan.

The company earlier commissioned a petro fluidized catalytic cracker that converts fuel oil to more high-value products like gasoline and diesel, and extracts the petrochemical feedstock propylene.

Find us Faithful

Sunday, May 04, 2008

We're pilgrims on the journey
Of the narrow road
And those who've gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives a stirring testament to God's sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race not only for the prize
But as those who've gone before us
Let us leave to those behind us
The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives

Chorus
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift though all we've left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

Repeat Chorus

"Ask faith to look through the keyhole of the promise and tell
you what it sees there laid up for him that overcomes; ask it to
listen and tell you whether it cannot hear the shout of those
crowned saints receiving the reward of all their services and
sufferings here on earth. And do you stand on the other side
afraid to wet your foot with those sufferings and temptations,
which, like a little trickle of water, run between you and
glory?"

Samal Island

Saturday, May 03, 2008

Samal Island offers unending fascination with its white-sand beaches, thick mangroves, coral reefs, rolling hills and rock formations. It is an archipelago of nine islands located in the Davao Gulf about 700 meters south of Davao City. An ideal model for resort and development, Samal Island provides a fabulous site for sunrise and sunset.

Samal Island, like the rest of Mindanao, is outside of the typhoon belt, and enjoys relatively calm weather. Its coastline is characterized by tall, swaying coconut trees, white sand beaches, rock formations, mangroves, coral reefs, and small fishing villages, all suggestive of a tropical island paradise.

Almost all of the beach areas have white sand, with widths varying from only a few meters to more than 10 meters. It provides ample space for picnic huts, reclining chairs for sun bathing, or for simply relaxing and enjoying the tropical scenery.

The water is crystal clear throughout the coastline, which varies in terrain from gently sloping sand beaches to steep cliffs and rock formations. The colors of the coastline at the beach areas transforms itself from the green lush vegetation of coconut trees, to the white sandy beaches, to the dark blue color of the sea, with its deep waters and coral reefs.

Among its popular attractions are the Aguinaldo Pearl Farm, the caves of Talikud Island, the White Stone Mountain, and the San Jose Muslim Fishing Village.
